The word 没有(Mei You). It means ‘Don’t Have’ in Mandarin - for example, if someone asked you if you had a pen they could borrow, you could respond with ‘Mei You’.
This word is THE BANE OF MY LIFE. It needs to be REMOVED from the Chinese vocabulary as it is systematically ABUSED.
"Do you have any french fries?"
"Do you have this dish?"
"Do you have ANYTHING AT ALL?"
People who use the word need to be punished. If you don’t have the dish, TAKE IT OFF THE MENU. If there aren’t any chicken burgers left, COOK SOME MORE. Some of the people I interact with are so quick to say ‘MEI YOU’, before they’ve even checked if it’s in stock.
"OH, IT TURNS OUT YOU ACTUALLY DO HAVE SOME? IT TURNS OUT YOU CAN COOK IT?"
I want to strap a shock necklace onto these people. Every time they say ‘MEI YOU’ they get an electric shock. GAH.
